Laminated glass was invented by the French chemist Bénédictus in 1903. Its technical requirements refer to the production standards for composite glass products made by sandwiching a PVB film between two or more sheets of float glass, pressing them together in a hot press to remove air, and then curing them in a high-temperature, high-pressure steam autoclave. Its English name is Laminated glass, also known as laminated glass. Transparent, milky white, dotted, and custom-colored PVB films can be selected according to requirements. This glass uses a PVB film bonding structure, which has strong impact resistance and prevents fragments from falling off, meeting safety requirements such as earthquake resistance, burglarproofing, bulletproofing, and explosion-proofing. The interlayer can block 99% of ultraviolet rays and improve sound insulation, making it suitable for building doors and windows, skylights, automobiles, and banks. The minimum product size is 250×250 mm, with glass thickness ranging from 3-19 mm, and PVB film thickness ranging from 0.38 mm to 1.52 mm.
Around 1910, engineers inserted adhesive or celluloid between two panes of glass, thus creating laminated glass. In 1938, the United States replaced adhesive with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film, which was transparent, cold-resistant, heat-resistant, and doubled in adhesion, becoming the standard configuration. The national standard "Organic Electrochromic Laminated Glass for Buildings" (GB/T 45921-2025) will officially come into effect on January 1, 2026.
